We all want to give but let’s face it we all don’t always have disposable funds and money gets tight, but no worries here are 10 amazing things you and your family can do today to give back for under $10.

GivingBack

  1. Watch Ads! Yes it’s that simple watch ads, think about it 9 out of 10 times you’re watching ads anyway, now you can do it and give back too. Visit www.clickforyourcharity.org and select an ad to watch, for every ad you watch, 7 cups of water will be donated to charity. Click For Your Charity is an advertising supported, free donation website currently focused on clean water. Human beings can live about 10x longer without food than they can without water, 40 and 4 days respectively. Just think about what watching a short ad can do.
  2. Play Free Rice! I’ve mentioned this before in our Ways to Give Back for Free post,  it’s such a great concept that we had to bring it up again. The site features a vocabulary game, where every correct answer you choose donates 20 grains of rice to an impoverished country. Play as long and as often as you like –you’re bound to pick up a few new words while saving the world.
  3. Use Good Search! Goodsearch started as an idea…and now it has turned into a movement. More than 15 million people used Goodsearch last year to support more than 100,000 non-profits and schools. Since 2006, Goodsearch users have raised more than $9 million, participated in over 1.1 billion charitable actions, and have truly made a difference. All you have to do is use it to search and they do the rest, you can also check out their Good Shop and Good Apps too.

  4. Complete Online Surveys and Donate the Money to Your Favorite Charity! Visit Survey Money Machines to browse a large network of surveys you can complete, earn money and donate to your favorite cause! Here’s a way for your to both share your opinion and Give Back! When you sign up as a panelist for survey companies, they send you surveys for your demographic (your age, gender, marital status, etc.). You fill out the surveys and then they pay you directly, either by check, PayPal or gift cards (like Amazon or Visa). Use your earnings to sow on seed on a charity doing good things in your community! Remember if ever you are asked to pay a fee to take surveys, you’re in the wrong place.
  5. Volunteer! Have some free time? Why not click on VolunteerMatch or the BCG Charity Spotlight section and see what volunteer opportunities are available for you! VolunteerMatch strengthens communities by making it easier for good people and good causes to connect. The site’s most popular service, a search engine of volunteer openings by area, welcomes millions of visitors a year and has become the preferred internet recruiting tool for more than 80,000 nonprofit organizations. Be sure to visit and learn how you can Give Back for free!
  6. Head to the Dollar Store and Pick Up Some Greeting Cards! A greeting card can really put a smile on a face; you and your family can make greeting cards to deliver to ill children in need of some cheering up. Two websites, Make a Child Smile and Hugs and Hope,  provide photos and information about sick children who are hoping for some happy mail. Families can make a card together for one of the children. You can also enclose something lightweight with the card, such as stickers, coloring sheets, a postcard or a bookmark.
  7. Be An Angel for a Senior! Too often our elderly are overlooked, but let us always remember to respect and give back to our elders. Through once-a-week chatty letters, friendly cards, uplifting notes and an occasional small gift, you can encourage and support an elderly person. It only requires about 30 minutes each week. If your family can reliably dedicate itself to such a schedule, visit Senior Angels for more information.
  8. Volunteer Virtually!  Sparked is a great way to volunteer online in your spare time by helping nonprofits meet challenges that they face, based on your interests and skills. This could mean everything from basic graphic design to research to copywriting. For example, if you have experience with social media, you might spend a short while brainstorming for ways to connect with people to help fight cancer. You can also download the Give Work iPhone app to help give work to Kenyan refugees and offset costs. It works when companies outsource online tasks to Kenyan refugees (like confirming that certain images are of what they say they are, or picking out spam comments on a blog). Through the app, you can spend a few minutes looking over these apps, performing quality control and training the Kenyan staff, enabling companies to keep outsourcing these tasks to provide work to these refugees. Pretty amazing right?!
  9. Thank a Solider! This is something you can do everyday and it only takes a minute, the best part it will bring joy to men and women who are far from home. Check out A Million Thanks and Send your message today.
  10. Go Big and Pitch In for Africa!  Anyone who knows me knows, I am a huge fan of the neighborhood nonprofits, I love to see everyday people leading change, but here is one way the big guys win, mainly through major corporate partners and even government grants, some of your leading nonprofits can stretch a dollar a bit further. Here are some great things you can do with $10 through any of these giant nonprofit leaders:  American Refugee CommitteeCARECatholic Relief ServicesMercy CorpsSave the ChildrenWorld VisionUNICEF USA, and World Food Program USA.  Through a unique program developed in collaboration with the Ad Council, a $10 text donation will go to a consortium of the 8 U.S.-based humanitarian aid organizations working to provide life-saving aid across the Horn of Africa. All donations will be divided equally amongst the consortium members listed above, and will directly fund relief efforts in the Horn of Africa.

Here are a few examples of what $10 can do:

  • $10 can feed a family of 6 for two days.
  • $10 can provide water to a family of 6 for two days.
  • $10 can truck one ton of water 18 kilometers.
  • $10 can vaccinate 17 children against measles.
  • $10 can provide three children with two doses each of Vitamin A
  • $10 can buy one mosquito net to help prevent malaria.
  • $10 can provide one first aid kit.
  • $10 will help build latrines and other sanitation facilities in refugee camps near Dadaab, Kenya.
  • $9 can truck in a month’s worth of water for a refugee
  • $10 can provide 24 people with soap
  • $6 can cover the cost of water purification for a family of five members for a period of one month providing them with safe drinking water and preventing further spread of water-borne and infectious diseases.

Not only is giving good, it’s cost effective, so get to giving!
