In 2007, Orayne Williams was a homeless teen living in a shelter. Despite the many emotional and physical struggles that may come with being homeless, Orayne was able to graduate from high school on time. Not only did Orayne graduate with a 91 average but he also entered college with three Advanced Placement classes. Upon graduating, Orayne received a full scholarship to Manhattanville College. People around the world were not only touched by Orayne’s ability to overcome adversity on his pursuit to success, but some wanted to become apart of his story. Unselfishly, Orayne returned back to New York City in 2011, to bring assist other ambitious youth in their journey to success. Orayne did this by creating the Progressive People Movement (PPM).
Purpose:
The purpose of the Progressive People Movement Inc is to give at risk youth all across the city hope by empowering them with overcoming obstacle skills. We want them to know that they are not alone and that there are others willing to do what they can to see them do well. With approximately 39% of New York City students are failing to graduate on time, PPM is having this dinner to help raise awareness of the graduation rate and struggles that plague homeless youth. This fundraising event will give PPM the opportunity to create a grant that will purchase a laptop and school supplies for a homeless individual entering college in the fall. PPM would like to provide these supplies to a homeless high school student who exhibits great promise. We want to show other at risk youth that if Orayne can do it, they can too. The cost is just $25 per person and the deadline to RSVP is July 20th, for more information contact Gabrielle Emmanuel at ppmmovement@gmail.com.
