In the summer of 2011 Beverly Bond, the Founder and Executive Director of BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Inc., launched the inaugural QUEENS’ CAMP FOR LEADERSHIP & EXCELLENCE in response to the overwhelming demand to expand BLACK GIRLS ROCK! mentoring programs. Over the past two years, this selective summer program has welcomed exceptional girls from around the world to engage in enriching and life-changing experiences. This year the two-week intensive leadership program will be held at Columbia University in New York City from July 20 to August 3, 2013. Through a highly selective application process, BLACK GIRLS ROCK! will accept female applicants who exhibit strong leadership qualities, high moral character, and excellent academic standing.
Queens Camp participants are encouraged to triumph over new leadership development challenges together; to engage in service learning activities, to take an active role in the academic, art, life-skills, and college prep workshops; and to cultivate lasting friendships with their peers. Staff members will mentor participants and facilitate dynamic programs emphasizing the importance of team work, community service and civic engagement, critical thinking, goal setting, and work ethic in order to promote self-confidence, positive social development and active leadership. Our goal is to foster the participants’ intentional pursuit of excellence, integrity, self-discipline, and collective accountability so that they may be prepared to be sound leaders in their local community and informed global citizens.
