First Lady Michelle Obama is the Ultimate Change Maker! There are a lot of reasons you can love our FLOTUS, you can choose to love her because of her humble beginnings, being raised on the South Side of Chicago, a product of Chicago Public Schools, she went on to study sociology and African-American studies at Princeton University to later attend Harvard Law School in 1988. No doubt she is the American dream, what everyone would wish for their little girls to grow up and become. However, if you have truly been paying attention to her continuous contributions to society then you will notice, she really is the ultimate change maker! And here’s our proof
Let’s Move! She’s helping American youth lead healthier lives and eat better, if you think about it, she’s actually saving lives, reducing health issues that will arise later in life and more. In 2010, she launched Let’s Move!, bringing together community leaders, educators, medical professionals, parents, and others in a nationwide effort to address the challenge of childhood obesity. Let’s Move! has an ambitious goal: to solve the epidemic of childhood obesity within a generation. Whether it’s providing healthier food in our schools, helping kids be more physically active, or urging companies to market healthier foods to our children, Let’s Move! is focused on giving parents the support they need to make healthier choices for their kids. In January of this year, she kicked off her “#GimmeFive” fitness campaign. It’s a simple request: Think of five ways you can be healthy, diet-wise or fitness-wise, and share them via social media. The fun never stops with our FLOTUS!
Joining Forces! Back 2 Back with it in 2011, Mrs. Obama and Dr. Jill Biden came together to launch Joining Forces, a nationwide initiative calling all Americans to rally around service members, veterans, and their families and support them through wellness, education, and employment opportunities. Joining Forces works hand in hand with the public and private sector to ensure that service members, veterans, and their families have the tools they need to succeed throughout their lives.
Reaching Higher! In 2014, Mrs. Obama launched the Reach Higher Initiative, an effort to inspire young people across America to take charge of their future by completing their education past high school, whether at a professional training program, a community college, or a four-year college or university. Reach Higher aims to ensure that all students understand what they need to complete their education by working to expose students to college and career opportunities; helping them understand financial aid eligibility; encouraging academic planning and summer learning opportunities; and supporting high school counselors who do essential work to help students get into college.
62 Million Girls! In 2015, Mrs. Obama joined President Obama to launch Let Girls Learn, a U.S. government-wide initiative to help girls around the world go to school and stay in school. As part of this effort, Mrs. Obama is calling on countries across the globe to help educate and empower young women, and she is sharing the stories and struggles of these young women with young people here at home to inspire them to commit to their own education. Another reason we salute the First Lady on this initiative is the fact that she always garners a bevy of support from celebrities and influencers to further spread the message. Pitching in for the 62 million girls campaign included: Kerry Washington, Beyonce’, Karen Civil and so many others.
Better Make Room! Most recently Michelle Obama kicked off a new campaign and we’re here for it. As part of her Reach Higher initiative, the First Lady announced a new public awareness campaign, Better Make Room, to target Generation Z, or young people ages 14-19, to celebrate education, change the national conversation, and reach students directly where they are and give them a space to create content while also navigating the college-going process. Better Make Room celebrates students. It acknowledges that things aren’t easy. It elevates their stories, their bravado, and hard work to new heights. It tells their stories through a lens normally reserved for sports stars and celebrities. In an info-jammed world where fame means followers, likes and reposts, the campaign brings celebrities and influencers to the platforms that today give star power to their peers: those without the traditional luck or talent of some of today’s biggest stars. With partners in the business, philanthropic, media, and education realm, this campaign will stretch across the country to inspire students and give them the tools they need to reach higher for college.
It’s sad to know that our favorite couple has just a little over a year left in the White House, but we know that our First Lady’s giving legacy will live on for decades to come, we can’t wait to see what she does next.
