Get More: Music News

“Making The Ordinary,Extraordinary” is what Jay Z named his carnival themed fundraiser that was thrown on September 29, 2011 for his Shawn Carter Scholarship Fund.

In Shawn Carter’s own words “We created the scholarship foundation to be an opening of a door; the first step in a new direction. No one should be cheated out a chance at success just because they can’t continue their education. I want to do my part so anyone that really wants it has a chance to achieve their dream.”

He is hip hop’s most successful artists, co-owner of  the 40/40 club ,  part-owner of the NBA’s New Jersey Nets and is also the former CEO of Def Jam Records. He has broken records in music and fashion around the world and is using that opportunity to give back!

The Shawn Carter Foundation creates an opportunity for underprivileged young people to further their educational endeavors. Jay Z as well as his mother Ms. Carter have created this foundation in order to make a difference for tomorrow.

CEO and Mission
Ms. Carter is currently the CEO of the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation. The Foundation was established by her and her son Shawn Carter after her retirement. It was essentially formed because Ms. Carter wanted to create “something that would enhance the future of our young people.” The Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation is unique in that it offers scholarships to single mothers, children who attend alternative schools, students who have earned a GED, students with grade point averages of 2.0 and students who have previously been incarcerated.

In 2009 The Wall Street Alpha’s Charitable Foundation Inc. awarded her the “Think Black Award” for her community service to youth for building social and intellectual equity for our youth. This same year she was also  presented with the “Tohma Faulkner Woman of Distinction Award” by Boys and Girls High School in Brooklyn New York for her dedication to community service.

From 2003-2005 the Foundation provided 50 scholarships to students in 50 different states yearly.

In 2006, in addition to providing scholarship awards to a growing number of students in need, the Foundation launched the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation College Tours. Since the Foundation’s inception, over 750 students have received awards totaling over $1.1 million dollars.

Thank you for making a way for people who cannot otherwise afford a college education can find one through your foundation, I am a parent of a twenty year old and I am struggling to pay for her to get a a college degree, she attends the Medgar Evers College and she feels that she has placed a burden on us to educate her with our limited resources, is there any way that you can assist with a small grant to help her, I have already commited to the spring semester, and even though it is a hardship, I will like my daughter to have an opportunity to have a chance in this ever changing world eventually a bachelor degree will seem like a high school diploma so i want her to take every opportunity to go forward, because of her status in the United States she does not qualify for federal loans, but she is determine to make something of herself. I know this email may get lost somewhere or not be responded too but thanks for giving me an opportunity to write to you all.
    Respectfully
