On Saturday, the Arizona Cardinals wide receiver will host his second annual Double Play Celebrity Softball Game, inviting sports fans and families to enjoy a friendly competition while raising money for good causes. At an after-party at the W Scottsdale Hotel & Residences, participants can mingle with the celebrity players and bid in a silent auction.
This year’s softball-game roster includes former Arizona Cardinal Anquan Boldin, who’s now with the Baltimore Ravens, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and DeSean Jackson of the Philadelphia Eagles, NBA legend Gary Payton and a handful of musicians.
Proceeds from the day benefit the Larry Fitzgerald First Down Fund, which supports several youth organizations, and the Carol Fitzgerald Memorial Fund, established for his mother, who died of breast cancer.
For several years, the foundation’s main fundraiser has been the high-end Larry Fitzgerald and Friends Celebrity Waiters dinner at Morton’s Steakhouse. Fitzgerald felt there was a need for a down-to-earth, family-friendly event that anyone can afford and enjoy, and he hopes the game attendance will continue to grow.
The five-time Pro Bowl player took some time after an early morning workout to talk about the game, his foundation and other charity work.
