BCG Change-Maker Lucy Hurston; the Giving Spirit of Manchester Community College!

Before you walk into her class, you can not help but notice a collage of Pr. Hurston and her buddies; Dr. Ian Smith, her and Oprah Winfrey, as well as former first Lady Laura Bush. Lucy Anne Hurston carries on the grace, pride, and strength of late Zora Neal Hurston. Zora Hurston is widely regarded as one of the pivotal members and writers of the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920’s along with Langston Hughes and Wallace Thurman.

Lucy Hurston understands the importance of representing herself and her family name well and she carries it with the upmost of confidence and grace. Pr. Hurston earned her bachelors in Sociology from Central Connecticut University and received her Masters from The Ohio State University. She now resides in Connecticut with her husband Sidney where she is admired and a respected Sociology Professor at Manchester Connecticut College. The same school she teaches at is the same place she started her education and preaches the power of education as she explains to every class her own journey. Hurston has a flourishing relationship with Habitat for Humanity New Orleans, Louisiana. Hurston is the epitome giving as she has fundraised for her students to be able to travel to and from Louisiana yearly free of charge, in large part due to her personal contributions. In her upper level courses Hurston asks her students to volunteer a certain amount of hours in addition to required course work. Giving back and learning the culture of public service and selfless actions is a central theme in many of her classes.
