Radio personality, author, and motivational speaker, Michael Baisden, continues to raise awareness about literacy and education in the African-American community. According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), illiteracy has overtaken two-thirds of African-American students by the fourth grade and almost half of inner city children. What exactly is literacy you ask? Literacy is the ability to read andwrite, and illiteracy is the inability to read and write. Today, in America, 92 million Americans have low or extremely low literacy skills and cannot read beyond a 6th grade level.
The goal of the Michael Baisden Foundation is to eradicate illiteracy in African-American communities by providing books, computers, and organizing workshops on writing and publishing. The foundation also provides funding for tutoring programs in state and federal prisons and reform schools, where one-half of adults cannot read or write at all. In fact, only about one-third of those in prison have completed high school.
Michael Baisden believes books change lives and tells his powerful story of how books changed his life. In ten years, he went from driving subway trains to becoming a four time best selling author, TV host, and, now, a nationally syndicated radio personality. He gushes, “Dreams do come true! That dream for me began when I opened a book.”
Michael Baisden’s own passionate testimony as to how books changed his life gives hope to those who have been enslaved by the shackles of illiteracy. In ten short years, he went from driving subway trains to becoming a four time bestselling author, television talk show host, and now, a nationally syndicated radio personality. “Dreams do come true,” he says! That dream for me began when I opened a book.”
Today, the Michael Baisden Foundation continues to work to help make a difference in the lives of people, communities and organizations in cities such as Atlanta, Philadelphia, Detroit, and Washington DC. Continued outreach is essential, and the Foundation cannot do it alone alone. They seek professionals, parents and community leaders to step up and volunteer their time as mentors.
