Radio and television host, Tom Joyner, saw the importance in African-American youth obtaining their education and started his own foundation. Established in 1998, the Tom Joyner Foundation supports Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the United States. The funds the Foundation raises are used for scholarships to support students with financial need and to ensure the sustainability of the institutions.
The Tom Joyner Foundation seeks to help students at Black colleges because education can be difficult to obtain when finances are an issue. Too often we find motivated students who get into college and are forced to drop out when they encounter financial difficulties. The Foundation provides money to counter this issue and to help these students complete their education. Every month the Tom Joyner Foundation selects an HBCU to receive its support. The scholarship support is then sent directly to the HBCU for the students.
