Diamond’s Love Foundation, a nonprofit founded by the family of retired boxing champion, “Sugar” Shane Mosley, has teamed up with the Susan G. Komen Foundation to organize a two day event, “Boxing for the Cure” to help knock out cancer. The event will be held on October 5th starting at 5pm PST and October 6, 2012 doors opening at 2pm PST. The star-studded amateur and professional boxing show and celebrity red carpet reception is designed to help raise awareness about the different forms of this life-threatening illness in a way unlike any other. The most anticipated fight of the evening is between current, World Boxing Organization (WBO) Bantamweight Champion, Kaliesha “Wild Wild” West who fights Christina Ruiz for the vacant IFBA Super Bantamweight World Title. The collaborative event will take place at Finish Line Sports Grill, located at 2201 N. White Avenue in Pomona, CA.
During the fundraiser, boxing enthusiasts can feast their eyes on high energy matches with West and Duenas along with an array of other professional and amateur fighters. A few of the confirmed attendees include boxers, “Sugar” Shane Mosley, Sugar Ray Leonard, Andre Ward, Henry Tillman, Mia St. John, Israel Vasquez, NBA Super Star, Kareem Rush, and R&B crooner, Al B. Sure just to name a few. Special invited guest include boxing greats Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Zab Judah, Victor Ortiz, comedian Affion Crockett, Milwaukee Bucks and NBA super star, Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, and several other A-list athletes and celebrities. Other features include a Q & A session with world champion trainers, an auction, art exhibit, prizes, and musical entertainment that include a rousing rendition of the National Anthem by NBA player Kareem Rush. Media outlets covering the event are Mundo Fox, Fox Sports Radio, New Media Radio Hour, Ringside TV, Social Media Mag, and others. There are expected to be more than 1,500 attendees.
The “Boxing for the Cure” event holds special significance to Mosley. During the event there will be a special tribute to two boxing legends whose lives were recently lost their lives to the disease. “Smoking” Joe Frazier and Genaro ‘Chiconito’ Hernandez lost their battle with cancer earlier this year. “This is my way of paying homage to these two amazing boxers who I consider icons in the sport,” said Mosley. The “Boxing for the Cure” event is helping to raise awareness for and educate about the disease in hopes to bring about a cure someday and K.O. cancer for good.
Proceeds from KO Cancer will benefit Diamond’s Love Foundation, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and The American Cancer Society. Diamond’s Love Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded by The Mosley family to bring awareness to critical community issues and child safety while mentoring youth who aspire to learn the sport of boxing. It is named in honor of the legendary boxer’s late nephew, Diamond Johnson, whose life ended at the tender age of three.
Mosley’s older sister, Cerena Mosley-Prude, serves as CEO and stated, “We wanted to do something to honor the legacy of our nephew. I’m extremely proud of the progress we have made, and we hope to continue positively affect the lives of others through our personal tragedy.”
Diamond’s Love Foundation provides education, physical and mental health, fitness nutrition, and improved social quality of life programs for the community.
