Art Sanctuary is a Philadelphia-based organization focused on providing meaningful access and creative space to experience, weave, and celebrate the artistic heritage of the African diaspora, for real. Recognized by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and Mayors John F. Street and Michael A. Nutter, Art Sanctuary uses the tool of literacy to expand the reach and imagination of people of all ages.
Mission
Art Sanctuary, founded in North Philadelphia by best-selling author and scholar Lorene Cary (“Black Ice,” “The Price of a Child,” “If Sons Then Heirs”), uses the power of black art to transform individuals, unite groups of people, and enrich, and draw inspiration from the inner city. We invite established and aspiring artists to help create excellent lectures, performances, and educational programs.
