The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority created the Delta GEMS to catch the dreams of African-American adolescent girls (ages 14-18). Delta GEMS, which stands for Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully, provides the framework to make these dreams a reality for the girls through several workshop tasks that help them develop a sisterhood with one another and a CAN DO attitude.
The Delta GEMS framework is composed of 5 major components: Scholarship, Sisterhood, Show Me the Money, Service, and Infinitely Complete. These components form a road map for college and career planning that the girls can cherish for the rest of their lives. Topics within these five major components are designed to provide interactive lessons and activities that provide the girls with the opportunity to self-respect, grow, bond with one another, and give back to their communities. The Delta GEMS is implemented by chapters of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority.
The goals for the Delta GEMS are:
-
To instill the need to excel academically
-
To provide tools that enable to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success
-
To assist girls in proper goal setting and planning for their futures, high school and beyond
-
To create compassionate, caring, and community-minded young women by actively involving them in service learning and community service opportunities
