Charity Spotlight: Gridiron Girls 4 Africa

With the support of defensive end for the Indianapolis Colts, Dwayne Freeney, the professional women of the NFL have come together to aid with the famine and worst drought in Africa in over 60 years. Over 12 million people of Somalia are experiencing food shortages, which have caused them to journey up to 30 days to reach refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia. It is on these treks that many women and children are raped, robbed, and even killed while in pursuit of nourishment and medical help.

The Gridiron Girls are headed by three women in the league: Alexis McCombs-Founder; Former Host, “Instant She-Play” on AOL Sports, Leslie Bonci-Team Nutritionist, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Randi Chapman-Sr. Director of Client Services, Sports Trust Advisors. During the 2011-2012 football season, this team has been ambassadors for Gridiron Girls 4 Africa, soliciting donations for economic relief in Africa’s troubled areas. Contributions from $10 to $5,500 will provide everything from feeding kits to all-weather tents to medical emergency equipment.
