The Ron Brown Scholar Program, founded in 1996, is a public charity named for the late Secretary of Commerce and his dedication to public service. As the first African American to serve in the cabinet as Secretary of Commerce and the first to serve as Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Ronald H. Brown was renowned for his global prominence, intelligence, political savvy and leadership. In April 1996, his life was cut short in a plane crash during a trade mission to Eastern Europe. Since 1996, the Ron Brown Scholar Program has provided academic scholarships, service opportunities, and leadership experiences for young, motivated African-Americans. Ron Brown Scholars are each awarded $40,000 ($10,000 per academic year) that may be used at the college or university of their choice. They are also given the nurturing and mentorship they will need throughout college and beyond. The Ron Brown Scholar Program has a proven track record of success with a 100% graduation rate.
Current African-American high school seniors who have excelled academically and in their communities are encouraged to apply.
