Robin Hood is an organization whose mission is to fight poverty in New York City. Our business is saving lives and lifting people up out of poverty. In our 23-year history, we’ve distributed over $1 billion to help our neighbors in need.
When September 12 dawned, we knew we had to find a way to help not only our neighbors, but all the victims of 9/11. We were aware that one of the core strengths of our organization was the ability to distribute aid money effectively and without bureaucratic delay.
We knew that funds would eventually be provided by governmental and aid agencies to the victims’ families, but it would take time. We made a vow that we would see that every single family of every casualty of 9/11 would have a $5,000 check in their mailbox, with no questions asked, before the holidays.
Ten years after 9/11, the victims’ children and families, and the families of rescue and recovery workers — our American heroes — still require mental health services that remain unfunded.
