Meet today’s charity spotlight Urban Reflections Inc. For more than 15 years, Urban Reflections has devoted to passionately mentoring at risk teenage girls in the Lakeland Community of Florida. This unique program founded by Angela Bailey offers Personal Development, Job Readiness, Academic Tutoring, Mentoring and much more. Urban Reflection’s Mission is to create positive social experiences, teach critical life skills, build character, cultural exposure, academic tutoring and mentoring for young girls ages four -18. The organization has a specific interest in serving the overwhelming number of at-risk girls residing in inner cities all over the state of Florida
Emphasizing the importance of a strong academic foundation, volunteering and community service to develop leadership, communication and social skills. Urban Reflections, Inc. is working within the community to aid girls in developing a level of confidence and self-esteem to lead the world. Through their programs every participant involved leaves with greater compassion and a more caring perspective on the world around them.
The foundation hosts a myriad of activities each year including: Clothing and Shoe Drives, Fashion Shows, Fitness Boot Camps, Youth Summits, Sex Education Seminars and Community Service Projects. A true mentoring program Urban Reflections provides participants with consistent support, guidance and relevant resources, they engage in activities with program participants on a weekly basis which further facilitates personal development and a positive self-image.
With a major focus on Education, Urban Reflections partners with parents to reinforce the goal of obtaining high school diploma. By creating a culture of support for the participants and showing them future opportunities and jobs where an education is not only important, but necessary. Perhaps what I love the most is that the participants learn the value of giving back, which I believe is a vital lesson for all of our youth. Through weekly dialogue sessions the organization fosters positive behavioral changes and increases self-esteem.
Research shows that only 27% of youth have a positive, adult role model in their life these numbers in urban communities continue to fluctuate. Seven out of 10 girls believe they are not good enough, have low self-esteem, poor self-images and lacks education; these are major problems the inner city community faces. Urban Reflections, Inc. believes mentoring is the MOST beneficial and rewarding way to encourage adolescent girls to succeed.
