“Never judge a person until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes” is a quote that Helen C. Fusilier, founder of the Walk In My Shoes Foundation (WIMSF), takes to heart. After being diagnosed with Stage 1 In Situ Ductal Carcinoma and undergoing surgery and radiation, Fusilier was cancer free and wanted to develop an idea to support other patients who are battling cancer. Many prayers to God led to the inspiration for the Walk In My Shoes Foundation.
The foundation hosts a variety of special events and programs that accept new and gently used shoes to be resold for the purpose of funding support for cancer patients. WIMSF provides assistance with utility bills, rent, mortgages, gas cards, medical equipment, special food, medications, and other needs. The 501 (c)3 non-profit organization has received donations from national recording artist Michelle Williams and BET correspondent Lala Vasquez. Those shoes have been placed on auction; bids are accepted via the website.
Ms. Fusilier’s philanthropic actions have not gone unnoticed. In May 2011 she was named the Real Action Hero by Good Will Giving Group. In November 2011 she was honored as Citizen of the Year by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. Currently, WIMSF is preparing for the Susan G. Komen “Race for the Cure” on March 17, 2012. They are forming a team and welcome supporters.
This is so awesome. I pray that God uses all of us to help others n some form or fashion. No amount is too small. We could just start with one family and direct our focus there.
