Chevrolet Discovers the Unexpected with Next Generation of Journalists; Meet the Dance Instructor Bringing “Hiplet” to the World!

Chevrolet is bringing out the best in young journalists from Howard university. The award winning automobile company has partnered with the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) to create the first-ever Discover the Unexpected Journalism Fellowship (DTU). NNPA and Chevrolet Malibu have made a lasting impact to launch the next generation of writers, photographers and social media experts. The summer program helped eight selected students tell good news stories from the African American community, at a time when we all can use more good news. Recording artist and philanthropist MC Lyte, who founded HipHop Sisters, is the official spokesperson for the program.

Through the program eight students from Howard University were selected to drive an all-new Chevrolet Malibu for the summer to find compelling news stories. The fellows had the opportunity to experience the all new Malibu first hand. DTU Teams are using the technology in the Chevrolet Malibu to help gather and share their stories, especially the built-in 4G-LTE Wi-Fi, which will allow them to always be connected. We’re so in love with the program that every day this week we’re sharing the news of these young leaders with our readers. Join us as we share this goodness across social media with hashtag #DiscoverTheUnexpected

“No one has ever seen African Americans do what they’re doing on pointe,” Bryant said. “Classical ballet is this ethereal thing; it’s this high art form and you’re not supposed to do anything to it. The girls are on pointe doing African [dance] and hip-hop, or Hiplet, my trademark, and it’s upsetting a lot of people. But that’s good.

Meet fellow Briahnna Brown, and her discovered story of “Hiplet” a mixture of Hip-hop and Ballet created by Chicago’s Homer Bryant of The Chicago Multi-Cultural Dance Center, thru Chevy DTU, Chicago Defender.

Earlier this year, a video of Black ballerinas dancing to hip-hop on pointe went viral. Those girls study “Hiplet” under instructor Homer Bryant at The Chicago Multi-Cultural Dance Center. Even though Bryant and the dancers have just recently gained national attention, Bryant has been instructing dancers of all ethnicities at the school for decades.

Bryant proved the naysayers wrong. Since going viral, Bryant and his dancers have been on Good Morning America and are now preparing to go to Germany for Fashion Week.

Check out the full video interview with Homer Bryant below and read more of Briahanna’s inspiring story here.
