It’s not often that companies seek to help us bring out the best in ourselves and truly succeed. Chevrolet is doing just that by supporting the talents of our countries next top black journalists. Chevrolet is one of the most winningest car companies of 2016, but I’m in love with the fact that they’re winning at giving too. Recently they partnered with the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) to create the first-ever Discover the Unexpected Journalism Fellowship (DTU). NNPA and Chevrolet Malibu have made a lasting impact to launch the next generation of writers, photographers, social media experts. The summer program helped eight selected students tell good news stories from the African American community, at a time when we all can use more good news. Recording artist and philanthropist MC Lyte who founded HipHop Sisters, is the official spokesperson for the program.
Through the program eight students from Howard University were selected to drive an all-new Chevrolet Malibu for the summer to find compelling news stories. The selected fellows who include: Briahnna Brown, Brelaun Douglas, Tatyana Hopkins, Victoria Jones, Sidnee, McKenzie T. Marshall, Brandi Montgomery and Rushawn Walters were chosen by a select group of NNPA Publishers, Editors, and Media Spokespersons. Discover the Unexpected is a year-long cross-country program focusing on multimedia journalism. Each team of NNPA Fellows took on a one-month commitment to complete a news assignment using Chevy Malibu’s innovative technology and NNPA’s professional advisors. Fellows received hands-on experience, formal training, mentoring and networking with journalism professionals. Plus one will win a prize for the delivering the story that most embodies discovering the unexpected.
This is the next generation of journalists and so it’s only right they have the next generation of technology to help them reach their goals. The fellows had the opportunity to experience the all-new 2016 Chevrolet Malibu first hand. DTU Teams are using the technology in the all-new Chevrolet Malibu to help gather and share their stories, especially the built-in 4G-LTE wi-fi so they are always connected. Each DTU participant also receives a $10K scholarship and a generous stipend. The fellows have had an amazing Chevy summer and discovered some good news, follow the journey of these amazing fellows at nnpa.org/dtu and on Facebook, join us as we share this goodness across social media with hashtag #discovertheunexpected.
