When you think of the word handicapped, what do you see? Do you picture someone that can make a difference in your life or just the blue wheelchair sign on a restroom door? Well, it takes all kinds to make this world go round; everyone has a purpose… and that’s what the members of the CLUB FOR THE UNIQUELY ‘ABLED’ (C.F.T.U.A) are here to prove. Officially, they’re a recreational support group; however, they are so much more. The club is a non-profit organization serving physically and mentally challenged persons in Hudson and Essex Counties of New Jersey, USA.
On Friday, June 29, 2012, something special is taking place. This date marks the first annual black tie affair/fundraiser called
A Night To Remember – Hollywood Nights – The Red Carpet, at Michael Anthony’s Restaurant in Jersey City, NJ, hosted by the CLUB FOR THE UNIQUELY ‘ABLED’. This event is affectionately nicknamed “The Adult Prom” due to the fact that many of the ticket holders never attended their own senior proms. “A Night To Remember” will be a night filled with music, dancing, dining, a 2 hour open bar and a variety of awards and gifts.
At C.F.T.U.A, each staff member has been affected one way or another by a handicapped circumstance; this is what drives their passion. The mission: To not only help their fellow brothers and sisters improve in social skills and independence, but it is also the members’ determination to build community awareness that everyone has something to offer.
Club members demonstrate their usefulness by participating in communal affairs, holding lectures at institutions, volunteering at food drives and feeding the homeless, as well as marching in local parades. The club also uses their capabilities for more exciting ventures like hosting and performing in talent shows and reality–based musicals written by themselves. “In life, the only thing that disables one’s ability to contribute, is the choices they make”, says David Howard, founder of the CLUB FOR THE UNIQUELY ‘ABLED. David is an employee of A. Harry Moore School for the Disabled in Jersey City, NJ and is also a graduate of the school. It is his inner strength and enthusiasm that inspires the hearts of all involved to recognize their strengths to share with the world.
