Subtle changes to the food you eat can make an impactful difference on the health of your body. Here are a few ways that you can enhance the nutritional value in the food that your family eats. Eat Healthier, Live Healthier!

Condiments– Sometimes the condiments themselves can decrease a meal’s nutritional value. Rather than putting thousand island salad dressing on your salad you can exchange it with a delectable balsamic vinaigrette. If you currently dip your seafood in tartar sauce you could try sprinkling it with the juice of half a lemon.

Seasonings– Excessive consumption of salt can cause high blood pressure. Oftentimes I have witnessed people adding salt to their plate prior to tasting the meal. Encourage your family to taste their food first to see if they really need to add anything in order to enjoy it. They may be surprised and find that the meal is delicious without salt.

Layers– There is a simple trick to incorporating more vegetables into a meal for someone who does not love them. You can layer the vegetables into a dish that they enjoy such as lasagna or shepherd’s pie. After you put a layer of pasta, meat and cheese in your lasagna dish you could put a layer of string beans on top. You could do this same method with shepherd’s pie, but perhaps with carrots.

Bake– If your family dines of fried foods a lot you could try baking as an alternative. Rather than putting your meat such as chicken or fish in a frying pan you could put it in the oven. This eliminates the oils and fats that come with fried food. I can attest that these baked meats do not lack in flavor.

Skin– Homemade mashed potatoes and potato salad are both delicious. When preparing these dishes, people usually peel off the potato’s skin. A lot of nutrition is in the skin of potatoes. Next time you go to prepare a meal with potatoes you could try keeping the skin on and seeing if your family enjoys the meal just the same.
