When our readers selected Holly Robinson Peete as the Inaugural BCG Awards Celebrity Giver of the Year; no doubt the reason was simple, she really gives back. The power couple Rodney and Holly Robinson Peete hosted their annual DesignCare event on Saturday night, under the stars and with the stars!
Autism and Parkinson’s disease are the two causes the family champions on a daily basis. Living with a son with Autism and Holly’s father who had Parkinson’s disease, these cause resonate with the couple like no other. Back in April BCG hosted a Twitter chat with Holly; learning that Autism in the United States now affects 1 in 88 children; higher in our boys with 1 in 54 boys. A huge increase over the years, the largest increases were among Hispanic and black children.
It is estimated that as many as one million Americans suffer from Parkinson’s disease, which is more than the combined number of people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and Lou Gehrig’s disease.
A bevy of stars that included Natalie Cole and Jeffery Osbourne who both performed at the event, Mark Curry, Holly’s former co-star in Hanging with Mr. Cooper, served as the Auctioneer, and Paula Abdul to name a few were there to support the cause.
The 14th annual DesignCare, a celebration of fashion and music, event was held at a private estate in Malibu, to benefit the HollyRod Foundation.
Guests enjoyed a lavish evening under the stars with festivities including a cocktail reception, silent and live auction and runway show by Los Angeles fashion designer Sue Wong. The evening also featured special musical performances by Natalie Cole and Jeffrey Osborne. The annual event raises funds for those living with autism and Parkinson’s disease.
