Kevin Olusola said he saw former President Bill Clinton playing the saxophone and said, dad “that’s what I want to play, I want to play the saxophone. I read about him a couple of weeks ago and I was sold instantly. This guy is the real deal. He was four years old, heard a song and played it off of memory. He mastered the cello at eight years of age, but still says the saxophone is “cooler”.
He is the son of a Nigerian doctor and is mom is a nurse from Grenada. He earned a scholarship to Yale University Pre-Medicine, earned a fellowship to study abroad in China. Not to mention he is fluent in five different languages. Kevin posted a video on youtube.com of him ‘celloboxing’ which ignited his stardom. In a couple of days he had a million hits.
‘Celloboxing’ is a mix of African-American beat boxing and cello put together for a unique sound. He admits his father hated it and thought it was loud noise, but quickly became a fan. I read about it celloboxing before I heard it and thought it would be something like an acquired taste but I was seriously fascinated.
Kevin and the members of Pentatonix won a Sony Music recording contract and $200,000 from their win on “The Sing-Off.” The group is currently working on releasing an EP and later an album. Olusola is also working on learning about music production.
Remember Kevin wanting to play saxophone, oh well he did. He played at Carnegie Hall. Kevin is currently leading a Crowdrise fundraising initiative called LEVE Housing: Home for a family in Haiti!
