Circumstances of Disappearance: Mitchell Malik Smith boarded a train at Union Station on December 16. He was headed to Birmingham, Ala., a trip he had taken many times before. Somehow he ended up on a train bound for New Orleans. A woman from Virginia who sat across the aisle from Smith says she heard Amtrak workers tell him he could get off at Charlotte and take another train several hours later to Birmingham. She then watched the workers help Smith off the train at the Charlotte stop. A Charlotte detective told the family in all the confusion, Smith told workers he wanted to go back to D.C. and Amtrak was supposed to have put him back on a train to D.C.
Last Seen Wearing: He is said to sometimes wear dark glasses and carries a red and white cane.
Identifying Marks or Characteristics: Smith is legally blind in both eyes. He has a scar on the right side of his head near his right eye and a possible smaller scar on the left side of his head.
