Finding Refuge is a non-profit organization that was created by a group of individuals who, while sailing around the world on a program called Semester at Sea, visited an orphanage in Ghana. The City of Refuge ministries is an orphanage that saves children from child trafficking in the Ghanaian fishing industry. The orphanage, which is owned and operated as a non-profit organization by John and Stacy Omorefe, has been in establishment for three years and is making a strong impact on the communities surrounding Lake Volta.
Finding Refuge was founded after the small group of university students spend nearly a day with the children living at City of Refuge. During this time, the students played a variety of sports and games such as soccer, cooked, and fed over 1200 children living in a nearby village. These students managed to leave their hearts in Ghana and knew there was so much more that could be done for this organization. Stacy’s reply to what more they could do was that “[they needed] people to spread the word that slavery still exists and is still happening all over the world today.” Finding Refuge was created as a way for those students to inform people of the reality that slavery is a prevalent issue in our world and to give their support to City of Refuge.
Today, the number of participants, universities, and organizations supporting Finding Refuge is increasing continuously and Stacy’s wishes to make the world aware of slavery that still occurs today.
