I am forever in awe of the growth and the good work that Steve Harvey continues to do for young people, especially our young boys. Recently, talk show and “Family Feud” host, best-selling author, and top radio host Steve Harvey hosted a powerful program for The Steve & Marjorie Harvey Foundation’s 6th annual Steve Harvey Mentoring Program for Young Men National Camp in Dallas this year. Over Father’s Day weekend, on June 10th-15th in a six-day interactive program, 100 young men selected from across the country came together in Dallas for a transformative mentoring camp experience, with Harvey and a variety of male mentors providing guidance in introspective sessions and outdoor activities to navigate adolescent issues, share the principles of manhood, dream building, life skills, educational tools and more to empower their futures.
Chosen through submitted applications, the Steve Harvey Mentoring Program for Young Men National Camp in Dallas serves young men aged 13-18, who are without fathers. Out on the camp, the young men’s mentoring experience encompassed personal enrichment, tools and frank dialogue on positive self-image, education, entrepreneurship, manhood, family, dating and more, as well as sports and entertainment, outdoor team building challenges with physical fitness, basketball, paintball, obstacle course, martial arts, fishing and wildlife education. Leaders from renowned educator Dr. Steve Perry, former NFL player Emmitt Smith, actor Dondre Whitfield, former NBA player Derek Anderson, motivational speaker and former NFL player Trent Shelton, Choice Hotels CEO Steve Joyce, teenage millionaire Jaylen Bledsoe, to the US Army, US Fish & Wildlife Service, and the National Society of Black Engineers, joined other executives and guests to mentor and inspire the young men in powering through obstacles and realizing a greater future without limits.
During the six-day mentoring program, mothers and chaperones also came together for a concurrent Parent Program in Dallas, experiencing frank discussions and uplifting sessions on family, teen issues, health and wellness activities, entrepreneurship, finance, and education with Dr. Steve Perry, Yolanda Adams, Chef G. Garvin, Donna Richardson, Queen Afua and more. On Father’s Day, at the program’s closing ceremony with the young men and mothers/chaperones, the program concluded with powerful inspiration for the young men and their families and honored a number of young mentees with Rising Star and Future Leader awards.
Created by Harvey with its first inception in 2009, the Steve Harvey Mentoring Program for Young Men has continued to expand, impacting over 1100 young men thus far through the national camp in Dallas and regional programs around the country. A cornerstone program of The Steve & Marjorie Harvey Foundation’s initiatives, this year’s 6th annual Steve Harvey Mentoring Program for Young Men National Camp in Dallas included support from Ford, State Farm, Choice Hotels, U.S. Army, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Coca-Cola, Masterbuilt, and Walgreens.
