Last night Queen Latifah was the belle of the ball, returning to her hometown of Newark, NJ to receive the Newark Beth Israel Medical Center Community Award for her Newark-oriented philanthropy.
The actress-musician, was one of three honorees at the hospital’s annual Partners in Progress dinner, which also recognized Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo and Dr. Margarita Camacho, the surgical director of the Cardiac Transplantation and Medical Device Program at Barnabas Health Heart Hospital who transplanted a heart in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy while the hospital was functioning on only a backup generator.
Newark Beth Israel singled out Queen Latifah for her family’s Lancelot H. Owens Scholarship Foundation, created after the death of the singer’s brother in 1992, and participating in programs about home foreclosure and the Newark Little League, in addition to her support of other local charities. The Lancelot H. Owens Scholarship Foundation principally targets minority high schools, the foundation provides educational leadership development opportunities to youth with strong, futures! For more information on the foundation visit lhosf.org.
Our sincere congratulations Queen!
