Kam Chancellor of the Seattle Seahawks made a special visit to the Hampton Roads area on Saturday, July 13 to celebrate the academic accomplishments of 10 James Monroe Elementary School students. As part of his charitable initiatives through the Kam Cares Foundation, Chancellor will present new bicycles to rising sixth graders who have displayed academic excellence throughout the school year. The recipients previously received The Kam Chancellor Academic Excellence Award – named in honor of the star safety and former James Monroe student – during the school’s promotion ceremony.
“I’m so grateful for the opportunity to have a role in recognizing the academic success of students from my former elementary school, said Chancellor. “I hope that this reward will help to motivate and inspire kids in the community, and serve as a reminder that hard work always pays off.”
The Bike Rally culminated James Monroe’s end-of-the-year award presentations. Recipients of the Kam Chancellor Academic Excellence Award also received gift certificates to Wal-Mart.
“We are thrilled and appreciative to have Kam Chancellor as an exemplary role model for our students, as his success demonstrates the importance of education, good character, and community stewardship,” said Felecia Allen, School Counselor of James Monroe Elementary School. “We are committed to making a difference in the lives of each student we touch, and Kam’s partnership and generous donation – not only as an NFL star, but a former student – is definitely a game changer for our school and community.”
The parade – led by Chancellor – began at Children’s Harbor Ghent, proceed down Llewellyn Ave., and end at Maury High School, the Pro Bowler’s alma mater. The Kam Cares Foundation has partnered with the Norfolk Police Department, Bike Norfolk, and East Coast Bicycles to provide a brief bike safety and registration course. Attendees also enjoyd a complimentary pizza lunch. In addition, the foundation donated new tricycles to Children’s Harbor of Hampton Roads, how cute!
This event is just one of several philanthropic initiatives sponsored by the Kam Cares Foundation this year. The organization presented the Fourth Annual Seven Cities Family & Friends Memorial Day Cookout in May and will host its annual Back-to-School Supplies Drive in August.
