I’m a huge fan of the Sisters Network, Inc. operating in 20 states – the organization is the leading voice and the only national African American breast cancer survivorship organization in the US. This Spring the group will host it’s 6th Annual Stop the Silence National African American Breast Cancer 5K Walk/Run.
The event will be held Saturday, April 25, 2015 in downtown Houston at the Discovery Green Park, 1500 McKinney, Houston, TX. 77010. Online pre-registration is open until January 31, 2015. Early bird registrants can register for $25.00/individual or $250.00/team (minimum 10). After January 2015, the registration fee is $30.00/individual $300.00/team (minimum 10). T-shirts are included in the registration fee. To register, log on to www.stopthesilencewalk.org, for more information, call 866-781-1808.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among African-American women. The incidence rate of breast cancer is higher among younger African-American women (under age 40); than among white women. The incidence rate of breast cancer is 12% lower in African-American women; however, the mortality rate is higher compared to white women.
Funds raised from the Stop the Silence® 5K Walk/Run benefits Sisters Network Breast Cancer Assistance Program (BCAP) which provides support to women facing financial challenges after diagnosis. The national program provides free mammograms and financial support for medical related lodging, co-pay, office visits, prescriptions, and prosthesis. Over $250,000 has been raised and set aside to provide free mammograms and support.
For the last 20 years, Sisters Network Inc. has been a leader in educating, empowering and promoting breast health awareness among African American women.
During the 2014 walk, nearly 10,000 participants from around the nation supported the event. Organizers for the 2015 Stop the Silence national walk estimate 12,000 women, men and children to register and walk in honor and celebration of the breast cancer survivors in their lives.
“The breast cancer awareness conversation is alive in the African American community. It is a powerful and moving experience to witness thousands of African American men and women walking together to support for Sisters Network and help raise funds,” said Karen E. Jackson, Founder/CEO, Sisters Network Inc.
“Our mission is simple, we must Stop the Silence in the African American community. African American women are dying to young. Breast health awareness, self-exams, mammograms, ultrasounds and knowing your family history can save lives. We must to talk about breast cancer. Sisters Network remains committed to being at the forefront of the discussion,” added Jackson.
