Breast cancer is the most common cancer among African American women. Among younger women (under age 45), however, the mortality rate of breast cancer is higher in African Americans than in whites. “Sisters Network is always looking for innovative ways to bring breast cancer information directly to the community. The 2013 National African American breast cancer ten-city conference tour has been a unique and effective outreach initiative for our organization. Sisters Network is honored to host our national African American breast conference tour in Atlanta at the King family’s historic Ebenezer Baptist Church,” said Karen E. The innovative ten-city national conference tour highlights general breast health awareness information and two major areas which frequently affects African American women. Medical presentation on “Triple Negative Breast Cancer” by Anita Johnson, MD, Cancer Treatment Centers of America. John McKnight, MD, also on staff at Cancer Treatment Centers of America will present on Advanced Breast Cancer. Among African-American women who develop breast cancer, there is an estimated 20 to 40 percent chance of the breast cancer being basal like or triple-negative and are diagnosed with more advanced stages of breast cancer. The 2013 National Conference Chair is Lisa A. Newman, MD, MPH, FACS, Director, Breast Care Center, Division of Surgical Oncology, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Edgardo Rivera, MD, FACP, Medical Director, Chairman, Department of Oncology, Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center, Gilbert, Arizona is the Honorary Conference Chair.
Local Atlanta physician, Dr. Rogsbert Phillips-Reed, Founder of Sisters By Choice (SBC), will receive the Sisters Network® Inc. Trailblazer Award for her extraordinary accomplishments in breast cancer outreach, education and survivorship. SBC provides a myriad of services to low income and minority communities throughout the metro Atlanta area.
