Sisters Network Inc. Lights Houston Pink For 2012 National Breast Cancer Month!

Sisters Network® Inc, the only national African American Breast Cancer survivorship organization in the United States. On Monday the organization hosted its 2nd annual pink lighting ceremony at the Sister House, 2922 Rosedale Street in Houston, TX.  The event served as a kick-off and celebrate National Breast Cancer Awareness month, the Sister House will glow in pink for the entire month of October. The pink lighting serves as a symbol of Sisters Network® Inc. commitment to increase awareness about the breast cancer crisis affecting African American women nationwide.

Over 100 elected officials, business and community leaders and breast cancer survivors attended the invitation only pink lighting reception.

Black women in Houston die of breast cancer at a rate of 45 percent greater than the mortality rate of white women according to a study conducted by Sinai Urban Health Institute. Access to care both mammography and treatment were cited as part of the problem.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among African American women. Research shows 26,480 newly diagnosed cases of breast cancer are expected to occur among African American women, and 6,040 are expected to die from the disease. The incidence rate of breast cancer is higher among younger African American women (under age 40) than among Caucasian women.
