The Snoop Youth Football League (SYFL) Chicago adds financial literacy to its scholastic program.Snoop Youth Football League Chicago (SYFL) partners with The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago to help empower youth in underserved communities through financial literacy.
Through a series of programs and initiatives offered by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, SYFL student athletes will learn the basics about money, savings and investing in fun and exciting ways. Athletes will take part in the Money Smart Kid Competition, an annual essay contest where kids compete for scholarship dollars. The competition
happens during Money Smart Week in Chicago – which offers a series of free classes and activities designed to help adults and children better understand and manage money. The partnership comes under the scholastic arm of Snoop Youth Football.
Money Smart Week program director and SYFL Chicago executives are planning to incorporate various elements of Hip Hop and the entertainment business in next year’s event to help drive the message of financial empowerment to youth.
“There are more millionaires under the age of 40 in America today because of Hip Hop. It’s so serious that Forbes Magazine had to create a new annual list called “Hip Hop Cash King.” Last year in a struggling economy and music business, Jay Z, Diddy, and Snoop
made the top ten on that list. They didn’t come from privileged families – they came from the same struggles that many of these kids are facing – they are the best teachers because their lives are the lessons,” said Tonja Styles, President of SYFL Chicago.
Styles launched Hip Hop’s first financial literacy summit, “Get Your Money Right,” with Hip Hop mogul Russell Simmons and the Hip Hop Summit Action Network in 2005, by securing the national title sponsorship with Chrysler Financial. “Get Your Money Right”
tour ran for three years and targeted college students nationwide.
Money Smart Week happens during National Financial Literacy Month in April. Throughout the football season SYFL Chicago student athletes will get to attend special events at The Money Museum and Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago to learn everything from how to save money to how invest in their favorite sneaker or gaming system company.
Snoop Youth Football League Chicago opens it’s inaugural season on July 30th with Hip Hop Icon Snoop Dogg. For information on the SYFL Chicago kick off featuring Snoop and how to register for teams email info@snoopyflchicago.org.
