Sophia A. Nelson, Esq. a national media and political commentator, was the keynote speaker for Teenshop’s 10th Annual Leadership Luncheon honoring women achievers and girls. Teenshop, founded in 1985, empowers ‘girls with goals’ to become caring, courageous leaders and change agents in their communities and beyond. All graduates go to college or professional schools.Nelson, who received the Board of Director’s Leadership Award, is the author of Black Woman Redefined: Dispelling Myths and Discovering Fulfillment in the Age of Michelle Obama. Nelson’s dynamic message encouraged the girls to have positive role models like First Lady Michelle to look up to.
During the luncheon, Teenshop founder Elleanor Jean Hendley announced the launch of Peaches, the Teenshop blog at www.teenshop.org/peaches. Blog features include a panel of Teenshop’s college students and young professionals, and a group of experts in education, health, and social media.
Hendley, an Emmy Award-winning former CBS 3 education reporter and talk show/producer host, founded the weekend nonprofit program while she was working fulltime in television news. Three chapters are located in Philadelphia and one in Los Angeles, California, each one directed by a five-member team of outstanding volunteers.
Hendley says she is especially proud that alumnae stay connected to the program. She comments, “We have alumnae in chapter leadership positions and on the Teenshop board, and the Alumnae Club held its first holiday scholarship gala last year.”
