If you didn’t know, I hail from DC via Accra, Ghana. Growing up in DMV (DC, Virginia, Maryland) the only sports team that aired regularly were the redskins, Bullets, (Wizards) the Capitals, and Virginia Tech! Being a football standout myself doesn’t hurt either, BUT that’s neither here nor there.
My Redskins (who will make the playoffs) are doing some charitable deeds right in time for the back to school rush.
The Redskins Charitable Foundation and Volunteers of America Chesapeake announced today they are joining forces to support ‘Operation Backpack,’ an initiative that collects and distributes backpacks filled with school supplies to children living in homeless shelters throughout the Washington, D.C. metro area.
‘Operation Backpack’ will begin late July and run through the first week of September.
By donating to ‘Operation Backpack,’ Redskins fans will help the Chesapeake affiliate reach their goal of collecting 500 backpacks and raising $10,000 to support the homeless children served throughout the region and best prepare them for academic success in the upcoming school year.
Fans who donate to Operation Backpack at training camp or at the first pre-season game will be automatically entered to win Redskins prizes.

“One of the most devastating consequences of homelessness is the impact it has on children’s education,” said President/CEO of Volunteers of America Chesapeake, Russell Snyder. “The goal of Volunteers of America Chesapeake’s Operation Backpack is to ensure that the homeless children we serve return to school prepared to be successful.
“We are thrilled that the Redskins have signed on to help us provide children with a level playing field despite their living situations.”
