Since Black History Month is upon us, now would be as good a time as any to implement some more ways to show appreciation to the black culture. Listed below are a few ways to show appreciation for black history that you could share with your family and friends.
Identify– There is an ongoing list of all the inventions that black people have created. For example, J. Standard created the refrigerator and Henry T. Sampson made the cellular phone. If you would like to research some of the other contributions that black inventors have made it could be a very eye opening and inspirational experience.
Beauty– I personally love seeing everyone’s individual beauty, especially those of African descent. Perhaps you would enjoy admiring the variety of shades, features and hair textures of beautiful black people. If you were to pass by someone who look nice to you it may be nice to let them know. Complementing people of all nationalities and colors is a small gesture that could light up someone’s day and celebrates the beauty of all people.
Business– There are countless black entrepreneurs in the world today. You could try to finding some black owned businesses and purchase from them. Whether you are in the market for furniture, real estate or a doctor there are companies, firms and agencies that are black-owned that you may want to look into. This is a way of embracing black entrepreneurship that can also expose you to new businesses that you may love.
Remember– As we look back on black history we should remember that we have come a long way. There was a time where black people were not allowed to read, write or even vote. While we still work towards a brighter future it would be pleasant to take a moment and say thank you to those who have paved a way for us in the past. We should not take advantage of the fact that we can all achieve amazing education and vote a black president into office but instead be the first in line for all of these opportunities.
Advance– If you see a problem that you feel needs to be addressed you can take action. Whether it be an empty lot in your neighborhood whose beauty that you want to maintain or the aftermath of a natural disaster that you want to assist in another country. One commonality of leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and Nelson Mandela is that they did not wait for permission but instead took matters into their own hands and made an everlasting difference.
